Forests Underwater

— A Decade Etched in Time —

“The world’s largest Nature Aquarium
—one complete cycle reaches its conclusion.”

Announcement of the Exhibition’s Closing

“Forests Underwater,” created by Takashi Amano and exhibited at the Oceanário de Lisboa, will officially close in June 2026. In accordance with the aquarium’s official decision, this exhibition will complete its ten-year display cycle.

A Message from Oceanário de Lisboa

Forests Underwater has existed as more than a simple exhibition—it has been a living passage of time. At this milestone moment in its journey, a message marking the closing of the exhibition has been shared by Oceanário de Lisboa.

A decade that will last forever

“If we pay attention to nature, we can better understand our world — and learn how to preserve it.” It was from this premise that Takashi Amano created his final masterpiece: Forests Underwater, the world’s largest nature aquarium.

Over the past decade, Forests Underwater by Takashi Amano has been far more than an exhibition. It has been a unique experience of full integration and harmony, where art merges with nature and science, revealing the beauty that emerges from balance between all forms of life. A living ecosystem that profoundly shaped the journey of the Oceanário de Lisboa and transformed the way millions of people came to recognise the importance of living in balance with nature — not merely as an ideal, but as an essential condition for life.

This living work inspired, moved and raised awareness, becoming an undeniable milestone in the Oceanário’s history and in the relationship between aquariums, art and nature conservation. Rooted in Amano’s vision — that true richness and beauty arise from harmony and balance — Forests Underwater invited us to contemplation, stillness and reflection on our role as human beings on a planet in constant change.

Hosting the world’s largest nature aquarium was both a privilege and a great responsibility, embraced with dedication, respect and deep pride.

The conclusion of Forests Underwater marks the natural completion of an exceptional cycle. As in nature itself, cycles come to an end to make way for renewal, change and new ways of continuing to inspire. This is not a farewell, but a celebration of everything that was lived, learned and shared over the course of this decade.

The legacy of Forests Underwater remains — in our collective memory, in the impact it created, and in the inspiration that will continue to guide us as an institution in constant evolution.

Thank you to everyone who was part of this story.

Words Left by Takashi Amano

Humans, the newcomers on this four-billion-year-old planet, now have the power to destroy nature. The once-clear water is muddied, and the once-green land is losing its color. In trying to make their lives rich, people have made us all incredibly poorer from the destruction of nature. Only desolate hearts can grow in desolate surroundings. We have to remember that we either live in nature or not at all. Through building and maintaining beautiful natural aquaria, people relearn the intricate connections between forms of life: plants, fishes, microorganisms, and human. Riches and beauty come from harmony, from balance. Aquaria are great teachers of this truth.

Forests Underwater — A Nature Aquarium That Continued to Live

Forests Underwater was created in 2015 as the largest Nature Aquarium in the world. The ecosystem formed by aquatic plants, fish, and microorganisms was not merely a display. It was maintained as a “living forest”—one that truly breathed and continued to grow.

Epilogue — What Will Be Carried Forward

Over the course of ten years, Forests Underwater continued to ask us what it means to live together with nature. That question will not disappear even after the exhibition closes. The philosophy and memories left behind by this work will continue to live on—in people, and in the craftsmanship of ADA.
