Nature Aquarium gets a part in world class aquarium

A space of the dignity nature invites
The grand opening of the urban aquarium “AOAO Sapporo” was held on September the 20th, 2023, in Sapporo city. “Moyok Sapporo”, located on floors 4 to 6 of a newly built complex facing Hokkaido’s oldest commercial street, is garnering attention as a new culture, nature and interaction-fostering facility. ADA has been working on this project, the world’s third giant-sized Nature Aquarium permanent exhibition, since about two years ago. With its own expansive viewing room, the Nature Aquarium Area is like the spatial equivalent to viewing nature’s artistry. In this issue we would like to focus on the works unveiled and the thoughts of the ADA Suikei creators that went into them, with a focus on the aquascape management team’s behind-the-scenes stories from the run up to the opening.

Breezy Stonescape
Creator: Yusuke Homma / Aquarium: W7,060×D1,260×H1,400 (mm)

With an Iwagumi layout, not only the arrangement of stones but also the space they take up and the compositional aesthetics when planning the plant growth balance, is important- though this becomes more difficult the more panoramic it gets. Though Hakkai stones are used in this (approximately) 7m wide super-panoramic aquarium, looking at the whole view or even the individual stones, with tape-shaped plants fluttering in the background, the arrangement seems to tell a story of the flow of water or time.
Aquatic Plants:
Riccia fluitans / Glossostigma elatinoides / Eleocharis acicularis / Helanthium tenellum / Aponogeton crispus / Helanthium bolivianum ‘Latifolius’ / Helanthium bolivianum ‘Angustifolius’ / Aponogeton crispus  ‘Red’ / Aponogeton rigidifolius / Eriocaulon sp.‘Social Feather Duster’ / Eleocharis vivipara / Cyperus helferi / Blyxa auberti ‘Red’ / Taxiphyllum barbieri

Autumn Leaves Under Water
Creator: Naru Uchida / Aquarium: W4,000×D1,000×H1,350 (mm)

In this layout I layered an image of Japan’s beautiful autumn leaves with the emotion I felt when first seeing the radiance of stem plants. I used over ten different colored stem plants with different leaf shapes, which became a highlight unto itself. Also, using stones and decorative sand, together with the vibrant greens of the ferns and Anubias in the center, I both created an image of a valley and, with the contrast, strengthened the impression of the background.
Aquatic Plants:
Anubias barteri var. nana / Anubias barteri var. nana ‘Petite’ / Anubias barteri ‘Coffeefolia’ / Anubias barteri var. barteri / Bucephalandra sp. ‘Sintang’ / Bucephalandra sp. ‘Kedagang’ / Alternanthera reineckii ‘Lilacina’ / Ammannia pedicellata / Rotala rotundifolia ‘Ceylon’ / Rotala nanjean / Rotala rotundifolia ‘Fujian’ / Rotala rotundifolia ‘Hra’ / Rotala sp. / Ludwigia arcuata / Ludwigia eel tricolor / Ludwigia glandulosa / Ludwigia repens / Ludwigia brevipes / Ludwigia sp. / Hygrophila polysperma / Myriophyllum sp. / Myriophyllum mattogrossense / Bolbitis heudelotii / Microsorum sp. ‘Narrow Leaf’ / Taxiphyllum barbieri

Garden of Light and Water Lilies
Creator: Yusuke Homma / Aquarium: W4,060×D1,260×H1,400 (mm)

Behind large and solid driftwood stretching lily stems and Blyxa guide your eyes upwards to the water’s surface where, as if you were in the water, you can see the underside of the lilypads, giving a sense of immersion which is part of the charm of this layout, in whose waters quietly swimming gourami and cichlids evoke the peace of the water lily’s natural habitat.

Eternal Forest
Creator: Yusuke Homma / Aquarium: W4,000×D1,000×H1,200 (mm)

This paludarium was conceptualised by imagining the new landscape created by fallen trees when plants make their home nestled amongst them. A wind blows, heralding rain. A ray of light shines through the encroaching mist. Scenes resembling natural weather are recreated through a production system that incorporates lived field experience.
