Adequate water flow is necessary for growing healthy and beautiful aquatic plants. Water flow brings CO2 and nutrients around aquatic plant leaves and helps plants absorb them. If water becomes stagnant, sludge easily builds up in the tank and causes filamentous green algae. Create adequate water flow with Lily Pipe to achieve a beautiful aquascape.

 

 

■ Growth of aquatic plant and water flow

Aquatic plants grow in water by spreading their leaves to absorb CO2 and nutrients directly through leaf surface. If water is completely at rest, the diffusion rate of CO2 and nutrients within the tank is significantly low and a lack of CO2 may be caused locally around the leaves of aquatic plants in the process of photosynthesis. To improve this situation, it is necessary to deliver CO2 and nutrients around plant leaves seamlessly using water current. When a filter is installed to the tank, water flow is naturally created by the water coming out of the filter. A point to note here is that excessively strong water flow is also not good for the growth of aquatic plants. It can cause falling out of plants and poor plant growth due to swaying. Nature Aquarium mainly uses external filter having great features such as not blocking light, not allowing much CO2 to escape from tank, high filtration capacity and discreet appearance. While ensuring the required filter capacity according to the tank size, it is necessary to slow the excessively fast water flow created directly by the filter. One of the approaches to obtain adequate water flow is to install a shower pipe at the outflow port of the filter. However, ordinary shower pipe made of plastic is not suitable for Nature Aquarium.

 

 

■ Shape of Lily Pipe

In Nature Aquarium where creating a beautiful aquascape in an aquarium tank is essential, it is ideal to use aquarium equipment which do not affect the beauty of aquascape. Most of the conventional types of external filter used inflow and outflow pipes that are made of plastic and colored in green or other color that is easily noticeable. Glass-made Lily Pipe is an improved version of these pipes to make them more sophisticated and less noticeable. Lily Pipe has a unique form of elegant curved lines, which incorporates the great features of glass including clarity and discreet appearance to keep distance from conventional type of external filter pipes. Having a totally different shape from conventional plastic shower pipes, Lily Pipe outflow is an epoch-making product that materialized ideal water flow for the plant growth. On the other hand, Lily Pipe inflow, which is paired with Lily Pipe outflow, was redesigned to have a new simple design featuring the slits of the water intake portion.

 

 

■ Water flow and algal growth

Installation of Lily Pipe (inflow/outflow) matching the tank size creates adequate water flow within the tank that helps the healthy growth of plants. However, if the water becomes stagnant in some portions of the tank due to stone, driftwood and lush aquatic plants, the tank can have sludge buildup and algae problems. Some solutions to improve such problems include changing the inflow and outflow pipe positions (front/back or right/left) and replacing inflow pipe with a longer one. When sludge buildup is observed on cosmetic sand or between plant leaves, suction it off with a hose during water change. If the inflow port of Lily Pipe is inside a plant clump and some plant leaves are sucked inside the pipe, the water flow is affected and results in stagnant water. To prevent the blocking of inflow port, trimming of aquatic plants should be performed as and when necessary. Particularly when stem plants have overgrown until they cover near the water surface, stagnant water takes place inside the clump of stem plants and can lead to the problem of filamentous green algae. Make sure to trim stem plants at a right timing to avoid this problem. Ensuring good water flow throughout the layout is a key to prevention of algal growth.

The inflow port of Lily Pipe is reminiscent of a lily flower, after which the product was named. Water flowed out of the filter crashes against the trumpet-like wide portion of Lily Pipe and moderately slowed.

How do I clean Lily Pipe if it gets dirty?

To clean Lily Pipe, use glassware cleaning agent “Superge” and Spring Washer. First, pour water into an appropriate sized bucket to a level at which Lily Pipe is completely covered by water. Then, add Superge sufficient for the water volume (add a capful of Superge to one liter of water). Soak Lily Pipe in this cleaning solution and let stand for 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on how dirty Lily Pipe is. Once Lily Pipe becomes clean, remove Lily Pipe from the bucket and rinse well. If the inner side of the pipe is still dirty, scrub the dirt off with Spring Washer.

Can glassware Lily Pipe be repaired if cracked or damaged?

Lily Pipe is a glass product and can break if excessive force or impact is applied to it. A point to prevent damage to Lily Pipe is to avoid applying force to two different parts of Lily Pipe at the same time. When removing Lily Pipe from a hose, hold Lily Pipe at a position nearest to the hose so as to prevent possible damage to the pipe. If the hose is stuck on Lily Pipe, do not try to force remove the hose but cut open the hose with a cutter for safety.

Q3

Water flow from Super Jet Filter ES-600 has become very low. Why does this happen?

A

Clogged filter media and dirt inside the pump are suspected to be a cause for reduced water flow. If this problem is caused by clogged filter media, place the filter media in a bucket and rinse with tank water to remove sludge. A key point of this process is to lightly rinse filter media. Anthracite come in small pieces and easily gets clogged. It is recommended to replace filter media from anthracite to Bio Rio, etc. when around one month has passed since the aquarium setup. If you are using Super Jet Filter E-600, be sure to clean impeller grooves, since water flow becomes low if dirt is accumulated in impeller grooves.

Good flow rate of long-used pump may be restored by cleaning the pump interior. Disassemble the pump following the instructions in the manual.
